Type Locality and Naming

By the village of Karamazar, right bank of the Aksakata River, Prishashkent district. M.V. Mikulin, T.M. Kremlyakova, M.P. Safarov, 1999 (Safarov et al., 1999f.).

Synonym: Karamazar Formation, Карамазарская т.


Lithology and Thickness

Dark brown, light brown subaerial loess with pedo-complexes with a clearly expressed alluvial layer and two horizons of dirty white travertine-like marls at the base. Paleosol is dark gray with a large cloddy structure with mole burrows. Thickness up to 14m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It lies without visible unconformity on the Turasay Fm, or on various horizons of the Kandyrsay Fm.

Upper contact

It is overlain by subaerial deposits of the Zarkent Fm

Regional extent

Prishashkent district, along the Aksakata River, Zarkent village, Samsarekskaya anticline, Angren (Aparatak) and Kashkadarya (Mingkuchar village) valleys.

Fossils

At the base, containing bone remains of the maral deer - Carvus elaphus and Casella sp.

Loess above the marls contains rodent fauna - Ellobius (Ellobius) ex gr. talpinus Pal., Cricetulus (Cricetulus) nigratorius Pal., Microtus (Plaiomys) ex gr. juldaschi sewertsov Thomas., M. (Branfordimys) afghanus Th., M. (Microtus) arvalic Pal., M. (Microtus) transcaspicus Sat., etc.


Age 

According to paleomagnetic data, it belongs to the upper part of the Matuyama chronozone and is older than 0.73 million years. F.P. Korsakov (166) attributed these deposits to the upper part of the Aksakatin Fm (Aksakata Fm) of the Upper Pliocene. E.L. Dmitrieva, S.A. Nesmeyanov (193) - to the Upper Pliocene.
